Why do personal growth anyway?

Personal Growth Professionals…changing the world, one breakthrough at a time.

That’s a pretty bold statement.        Changing the world!

Are we really up to it? Can we claim that mantle and wear it?
What does it mean if we do?

Personal Growth Professionals cover a whole range of professions and specialties. You might be a motivational speaker, a counselor, coach, mentor, author, chiropractor, body worker, spiritual leader, or something else altogether…but the bottom line is, if you consider yourself to be a professional in the personal growth arena, then you probably already know that you have the capacity to make a difference. You know that what you say and do (as well as don’t say and don’t do) make a significant impact on the people with whom you come in contact, and that they in turn have an impact on those around them. Sort of the whole ripple thing.

So you really are changing the world, one person or one breakthrough at a time. That’s the way it works. And we are some of the luckiest people on the planet to get to participate in this!

I tend to meet personal growth professionals in one of two places on the “value spectrum.”

They either know what they are doing is providing great value, and are generally excited about getting out there and doing it again.
Or, the ugly head of doubt has reared itself again, and they are wondering if anything they do really makes a difference. Or even more frustrating, they wonder if they are any good at what they are doing.

All part of the human condition, yes?
And, therefore, all part of the personal growth condition.

You’ve probably heard the concept that great adversaries create great men, or the kit flies highest against the strongest wind. You’ve probably even used similar statements in your work. :) All nice metaphors for how the challenges in our lives provide opportunities.

It’s easy to believe in these metaphors and stories when things are going well – just like it is for our clients. It’s a bit harder when we hit the hard times. Then it just sounds like words. The same can happen for us.

But, for many of us, that is actually WHY we are personal growth professionals.

We can’t not help. We can’t not grow. Virtually everything we do or hear or read relates to us, the human condition, or some valuable perspective that can make a difference, yes?

We have the kinds of minds that once expanded, can never go back to the way we used to think about things. I’m sure we can muddle around in the muck with the best of them, but at some point we get ourselves out because, well, we just do.

That’s who we are.
So why be a personal growth professional?
Because for most of us, we would be doing this work even if we tried to avoid it. We can’t not be one. People seek us out. We read or hear something that might mean something to someone, and we just have to share it. It’s who we are.

What do you think?
Why did you join this hybrid of professions?
What’s the personal benefit you get from being a personal growth professional?
